FIELD: tobacco products.
SUBSTANCE: method for producing bleached tobacco material. The method includes the steps of (i) extracting tobacco material with an aqueous solution to provide solid tobacco materials and tobacco extract, (ii) treating solid tobacco materials with a caustic wash solution to provide tobacco pulp; (iii) bleaching the tobacco pulp with a solution containing a strong base, an oxidizing agent, or a combination thereof to provide a bleached tobacco pulp, and (iv) drying the bleached tobacco pulp to provide a bleached tobacco material. Solid tobacco materials are mixed with wood pulp before step (ii). The invention also provides a smokeless tobacco product comprising bleached tobacco material. EFFECT: invention makes it possible to produce a light-coloured, i.e. bleached tobacco material.
