SUBSTANCE: invention relates to decoding means. Receiving, by means of a decoder, a bit stream containing an encoded current image, including a coding tree unit and signalling information, wherein the signalling information includes a set of sequence parameters comprising a flag indicating that a geometric partitioning is applied to the bitstream, a first geometric partitioning index information enabling determination, by a decoder, for a first straight line of a partitioning boundary in a coding tree unit, a first end point at the boundary of the coding tree unit and a second end point at the boundary of the coding tree unit, second geometric partitioning index information providing the determination, by a decoder, for a second straight line of the partition boundary in a coding tree unit, a first end point on the boundary of the coding tree unit and a second end point on the first straight line of the partition boundary. Current unit of the coding tree is decoded using the first geometric partitioning index information and second geometric partitioning index information for reconstructing the coding tree unit, wherein the reconstructed coding tree unit is partitioned into three non-rectangular areas of the first and second partitioning boundary straight lines.

EFFECT: reduction of blocking artefacts at the boundaries of the object.
