SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an aerosol generating device. Device comprises a membrane having an aerosol generation zone, wherein the aerosol generation zone comprises a plurality of nozzles, the plurality of nozzles being the only nozzles in the aerosol generation zone; and a drive connected to the membrane. Drive is configured to excite the membrane to vibrate the membrane at one or more preset modal frequencies of the membrane for the purpose of aerosolization when using a liquid substrate that forms an aerosol passing through a plurality of nozzles. More than 50 % of the plurality of nozzles are located closer to the antinodes than to the membrane units, wherein the antinodes and nodes correspond to the membrane excited at one or more given modal frequencies of the membrane. Thickness of the membrane gradually changes from the central area of the membrane to the periphery of the membrane.
