FIELD: power engineering.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a toroidal field coil for a plasma chamber of a tokamak with a central column. Coil comprises first and second units with high-temperature superconductor, HTSC, containing corresponding one or more HTSC tapes for conducting electric current parallel to axis of central column. Each of the HTSC tapes contains HTSC material with its inherent critical current, which depends on the magnetic field on the HTSC tape when the central column is in operation. Central column additionally contains a cooling mechanism designed so that to enable preferential cooling of the first HTSC unit relative to the second HTSC unit.

EFFECT: possibility of reducing or eliminating the difference in critical current of said or each HTSC tape of the first HTSC unit relative to the critical current of said or each HTSC tape of the second HTSC unit.
