SUBSTANCE: invention relates to separation of different types of scrap into separate fractions. In the apparatus and method, shears of various shapes can be used and there are no restrictions for scrap of any given dimensions or weight. Apparatus for sorting scrap according to its chemical composition comprises shears (10, 110) configured to cut scrap, analyser (28, 128) of the chemical composition of cut material (145), located downstream of shears (10, 110), vehicles (20, 26, 126, 140, 142, 144, 146) for transportation of said cut material (145) to said analyser (28, 128), unloading system (26, 32, 34, 36, 38, 150), configured to separate analysed material (30, 145) in accordance with its chemical composition determined by analyser (28, 128), wherein vehicles include a number of vibration elements and conveyors, and as a vehicle along the process flow after said shears and below the opening of the shears container there is a conveyor belt made with the possibility of placing the cut material.

EFFECT: invention helps to optimize loading of melting furnaces with scrap of different types, which differ, for example, by content of copper in them.
