SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method and an optical sensor for checking valuable documents. Method of inspecting a valuable document placed in the working area of an optical sensor, comprising: a photodetector line comprising a plurality of detector elements arranged next to each other, lighting line, containing several located next to each other in the number of N light sources, control-detector line containing several light-sensitive control elements located next to each other and data processing device. Method involves performing the following steps: conducting a self-control test of the optical sensor before checking the valuable document, in which N light sources are switched on and by means of control elements the light intensity MSj is recorded, input of the valuable document into the working area of the optical sensor, simultaneous switching on of N light sources for illumination of the valuable document introduced into the working area with the light emitted by them and performed by means of detector elements registration of light measurement results from valuable document, correction of measurement results Di performed by data processing device based on the light intensities MSj recorded by the control elements during the self-control test, and the valuable document is checked by the data processing device based on the measurement results Di*, corrected using the corresponding correction factors FKi.

EFFECT: high accuracy of correction of measurement results, taken from several adjacent detector elements when illuminating a valuable document with several adjacent light sources, equipped with their own control elements, by applying a correction factor calculated individually for a detector element based on light intensities recorded during a self-control test by several control elements.
