FIELD: measuring.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to gas analysis and can be used to determine concentration of ethylene in an inert medium with nitrogen, which is used to prevent fires and explosions during operations in the oil and gas industry. Electrochemical method of determining concentration of ethylene in nitrogen consists in the fact that in a stream of analysed gas at temperature from 450 to 700 °C, electrochemical cell with a cavity formed by two disks from a proton-conducting solid electrolyte is placed. On the opposite surfaces of one of the discs there is a pair of electrodes, to which DC voltage is supplied in range of 1500-2500 mV with the supply of a positive pole to the external electrode, by means of which electrolysis of water vapours and pumping of oxygen obtained as a result of electrolysis from flow of analysed gas into cavity of cell along electrochemical circuit: external electrode – solid electrolyte – internal electrode. In the process of achieving a steady state, when the flow of products of reducing ethylene from the cavity of the cell becomes equal to the flow of the analysed gas entering the cavity of the cell, limiting current flowing through the cell is measured and the concentration of ethylene in nitrogen is determined from the value of limiting current corresponding to content of hydrogen spent on reduction of ethylene to ethane.
EFFECT: possibility of determining content of ethylene in an inert medium with nitrogen by means of an amperometric cell with a proton-conducting solid electrolyte.
