FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of applying a thin-film coating when processing steel and carbide tools and can be used in various branches of machine building. Method of applying a thin-film coating on metal articles involves treatment in a gaseous reaction medium containing carbon, silicon, hydrogen and nitrogen. Main source of heat energy used is an acetylene-oxygen jet modified with a reaction gas stream containing carbon, hydrogen, silicon, nitrogen and oxygen, containing: 0.08-0.25 wt.% carbon, 0.05-5.00 wt.% hydrogen, 0.17-0.90 wt.% silicon, 0.07-1.1 wt.% nitrogen, 0.02-0.09 wt.% oxygen. Reaction zone of the flame is moved along the surface of the article at speed of 2-150 mm/s.
EFFECT: improved mechanical properties of thin-film coatings of surfaces of machine parts and tools.
