FIELD: medicine.
SUBSTANCE: invention refers to medicine, namely to neurophysiology and neurosurgery, and can be used for prediction of clinical outcome in patients with focal epilepsy after surgical treatment. A fragment of the temporal lobe of the brain removed during the lobectomy is examined using microelectrodes for intracellular recording of electrical parameters. Presence of grouped spike-sharp waves with duration from 20 ms to 70 ms, frequency from 14 Hz to 50 Hz and amplitude exceeding background activity is considered to be a positive predictor of seizure termination. This testifies to the effectiveness of surgical treatment of focal epilepsy.
EFFECT: method enables higher accuracy of localization of an epileptic focus and provides an objective prediction of the clinical outcome of the patient after a surgical intervention.
