FIELD: medicine.

SUBSTANCE: present invention refers to medicine, namely to anaesthesiology and resuscitation. It can be used for preoperative risk assessment of postoperative respiratory failure accompanying abdominal surgeries. Method for prediction involves preoperative determination of risk factors: alcohol dependence, insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, chronic heart failure and chronic kidney disease. Besides, an important role in prediction is given to localization of surgical intervention, physical status of 1-3 classes according to ASA classification, high operational risk, duration of threshold apnoea after deep breath by means of modified Stange's test. Risk determination is carried out according to the disclosed mathematical formula and if obtained value is > -5.344518, high risk is predicted, and if ≤ -5.344518 – low risk of postoperative respiratory failure.

EFFECT: method provides more accurate prediction of postoperative respiratory failure in elective abdominal surgery.
