FIELD: medicine.

SUBSTANCE: invention refers to medicine, namely to anaesthesiology and resuscitation, and can be used in assessing a risk of postoperative pneumonia in elective abdominal surgery. Before the operation, determining the presence or absence of alcohol dependence, preoperative administration of bronchodilators, disseminated oncological disease, functional dependence – partial or complete, physical status according to ASA classification, type of operation – open coloproctological surgery or open upper abdominal surgery – and duration of arbitrary threshold apnoea after deep breath. Derived data are used to determine a risk (K) of postoperative pneumonia by a pre-set formula. If K is more than -5.200465, a high risk of postoperative pneumonia is predicted; if K is equal to or less than -5.200465, a low risk of postoperative pneumonia is predicted.

EFFECT: method enables the preoperative detection of the patients with a high risk of postoperative pneumonia and the selection of the optimum postoperative management by assessing a set of the most significant parameters.
