FIELD: metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: metal is fed to crystallizer, ingot is withdrawn from it with alternative rate, slam mixture is fed on surface of metal in the crystallizer. The crystallizer reciprocates. The ingot is directed by free running and driving rollers. The surface of the ingot is cooled in zone of secondary cooling with a coolant which is sprayed by nozzles interposed between rollers. The specific flow rates of coolant in flowing along the zone of the secondary cooling is changed from maximum value under the crystallizer up to minimum value at the end of the cooling zone. Surface and structure of ingots are monitored. Detecting of defects in ingots is conducted downstream of the zone of secondary cooling and when the number of defects is equal to 0.2-10 defects per square meter of surface of the ingot over its periphery and thickness one increases the frequency of reciprocations of the crystallizer by 5-25% of working value. If the number of defects exceeds 10 defects per square meter one stops the casting. EFFECT: enhanced quality of ingots. 1 tbl
