FIELD: electrical engineering. SUBSTANCE: method involves applying across the arc gap a voltage from an arc current supply source, as well as triggering pulses. Prior to applying the triggering pulses, the output of the arc supply source is short-circuited for the time sufficient for a short-circuit current to build up to the level pertinent to a stable arc current. The device embodying the method has an arc current supply source, a threshold member, a switch, a triggering pulse generator, output buses of the supply source. EFFECT: more reliable operation, simplified design. 3 cl, 8 dwg
