FIELD: metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: method provides for measurements of voltage of electrolyzer and current, that goes through it, determination of resistance of the electrolyzer and its average value for time period, that passed from the last anode motion, comparison of the parameters with given values of resistance and the anode motion in case of even one of the parameters exceeds its range of resistance. The range of values for resistance of the electrolyzer is set expanded and permanent and the range of values for average value of resistance is set equalled to value of a constant range of values in instant of each motion of the anode and decrease it inversely with the time, that passed from the instant of the last motion of the anode. EFFECT: method stabilizes thermal conditions of operation of electrolyzer and decreases rate of control actions. 3 dwg
