FIELD: manufacture of composite materials. SUBSTANCE: a self-carrying substrate comprising metal and metal boride as the main phases is prepared by contacting a original metal with the component that reacts with such metal to form its boride. The resulting metal boride is then heated to a temperature that is above then the melting point of the metal, and is below then the melting point of its boride in the presence of an inert material under keeping it at the same temperature for the period of time being sufficient for this reaction. The original metal may be Al, Si, Ti, Zr, Hf, La, Fe, Ca, V, Nb, Be, Mg. From such metal there is manufactured a slab at least one surface of which is subjected to contact with a metal material selected from B or mixture of B with refractory boride, which forms under heating an original metal boride or mixture of such boride and//or B with an inert material. A component that reacts with an original metal may be preformed. B and/or boride is used in stoichiometric ratio. The heating process is carried out until a basic metal is reacted completely. An original metal is used in excess to a ratio between B and/or boride. EFFECT: improved quality. 3 cl, 5 dwg
