FIELD: organic chemistry. SUBSTANCE: methyl tert-butyl ether is prepared by contacting an isobutylene-containing C4- fraction and methanol in a liquid phase at elevated temperature in the presence of a sulfocationite catalyst in H-form in two reaction zones at a total methanol to isobutylene molar ratio of 0.90-0.99:1 by feeding the starting 85-95% C4 fraction into the first reaction zone and the remaining amount into the second zone at maintaining 20-40 C and subsequently separating the reaction mixture and recovering the desired product. EFFECT: lower power consumption at the stage of recovery of methanol from the spent C4-fraction and greater efficiency of the catalyst. 1 tbl
