FIELD: organic chemistry. SUBSTANCE: methyl tert-butyl ester is prepared by contacting an isobutylene-containing C4- fraction and methanol in a liquid phase in two reaction zones at a methanol to isobutylene molar ratio of 0.90- 0.99):1.00 and the conversion of isobutylene is maintained at 80-90% and at 20-40 C in the second reaction zone. EFFECT: lower energy consumption at the C4-fraction recovery stage and greater efficiency of the catalyst. 1 tbl
