FIELD: metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: method comprises steps of feeding metal to a continuous casting mold, drawing an ingot from the mold with a variable speed, holding and guiding the ingot in a secondary cooling zone with the aid of slit rollers, having intermediate supports, determining boundaries of defective portions of a surface of the ingot and cutting out portions off the ingot; at process of continuous metal casting detecting a displacement of the intermediate support, spaced from a lower end of the mold by a distance, consisting 0.5-5 values of the ingot thickness, and at a time moment, when the displacement is over, than the ingot thickness value by 0.0005-0.006, detecting a front boundary of the defective portion, and upon change of that displacement up to a value, equal to 0.0001-0.002 of the ingot thickness value detecting a terminating boundary of the defective portion.
