FIELD: organic and organoelemental chemistry; environmental safety. SUBSTANCE: halogen-containing compounds, in particular, those being hazardous for humans and environment (including dioxines, dibenzofuranes, forbidden for practical application herbicides, insecticides, etc.) are detoxified as follows. Compounds to be detoxified are mixed with a powder of metal such as aluminium, magnesium, zinc, iron, manganese, etc. or metal alloy such as titanium-aluminium and titanium-nickel followed by primary local heat-initiation of chemical interaction of mixture components. Reaction proceeds with self-heating in automatic mode producing carbonaceous material and metal halide which may be readily isolated by dissolving in water and subsequent evaporation. EFFECT: simplified process; reduced expenses; lack of environmental problems. 4 cl
