FIELD: civil engineering. SUBSTANCE: first, subjected to analysis is design documentation for metal structures so as to determine types and dimensions of structural components. Obtained data are processed, calculations are made for strength at design dimensions of components under normal loads both permanent and temporary. Design operational and maximal permissible stresses in components are determined. Table of dimensions is complied and metal components are subjected to instrumental investigation with using table dimensions. Then, checking is carried out for correspondence of resulted data to design characteristics of shapes. Loads unspecified by design documentation are detected. Dimensions of components are measured. Results of instrumental investigation recorded in table of dimensions are processed and on this basis calculations of component strength are made and design operational stresses are determined, they are compared with permissible stresses, dimensions of strengthening components are determined used for subsequent reinforcement of existing components in which design operational stresses exceed permissible ones. Finally determined are maximal rates of corrosion, permissible wear and service life. EFFECT: high efficiency. 15 cl, 10 tbl
