FIELD: petrochemistry, fuel production. SUBSTANCE: diesel fractions are subjected to hydrofining in presence of a packet of alumina catalysts containing 10 to 100 wt % of alumino/cobalt/molybdenum catalyst. Catalysts are activated either with elementary sulfur in amount not higher than 30% based on the packet weight or with oil distillate fraction with sulfur content S(C+H)/C, where S is sulfur content in diesel fraction to be treated, C and H contents of alumino/cobalt/molybdenum and alumino/nickel/molybdenum catalysts in packet, wt %. EFFECT: enhanced catalyst activity, reduced sulfur content in diesel fuel. 1 tbl
