FIELD: water treatment practice. SUBSTANCE: water to be purified is first passed through sorption filter comprising bed of granulated active coal modified with manganese sulfide, and next through filter comprising bed of silver-modified active coal. Content of component used to modify active coal is 0.5-1 wt.%. Volume ratio of sorbents in filters ranges from 10 : 1 to 20 : 1, water to be purified being contacted with water for 0.5-1 hour. Proposed method can be used to purify drinking water from harmful impurities, such as heavy metals, aromatic and chroline-containing organic substances, as well as from microorganisms sensitive to silver ions. EFFECT: method is practicable under household conditions to supply drinking water in environmentally inclement areas. 1 tbl
