FIELD: metallurgy, metal machining, mechanical engineering, inspection of quality and stability of technological processes. SUBSTANCE: hard conductive indenter is forced into surface of tested metal and amplitude of signal of thermoelectromotive force is measured. Signal of thermoelectromotive force integrated in the course of length of its pulse is measured as second parameter. Obtained values are compared with their standard magnitudes. Device for implementation of method has case with tip manufactured in the form of end bushing, striker housed in case, conductive indenter put under striker, spring interacting with striker mounted for reciprocating motion and electron unit. End bushing is made of conductive hard material and has sharpened protrusions on outer butt. Indenter is positioned in space of end bushing. Insulation bushing holding indenter is placed between indenter and end bushing. Indenter and end bushing are electrically connected to inputs of amplifier of electron unit which incorporates first peak detector and first integrator to measure amplitude of signal, integrator, second peak detector and second indicator the course of length of its pulse to integrate signal in In this case inputs of first peak detector and integrator are connected to outputs of amplifier.
