FIELD: nondestructive inspection of materials and parts. SUBSTANCE: method includes coating surface under inspection with volatile penetrant and recording flaws by applying indicating material to surface. Ammonia solution is used as penetrant. The latter is applied from gas phase. Indicating material is, essentially, paper base covered with indicator of sulfophthalein group in the amount of 1•10^-4 to 1•10^-3 per 1 cu.cm of paper. Device for applying penetrant from gas phase has specimen chamber and penetrant vessel. The latter has two tubes. One end of first tube is connected to chamber and its other end is placed above penetrant level. One end of second tube is connected to air source and its other end is placed into penetrant.
