FIELD: mechanical engineering; electrical equipment of internal combustion engines. SUBSTANCE: train of igniting discharges is passed through spark plug electrodes at end of compression stroke with checking of presence of capacitive components in one or several discharges, starting from second discharge and, if capacitive components are detected in all discharges, ignition miss signal is formed. Ignition system implementing the proposed method has ignition coil 1 whose primary winding 2 is connected to supply source through electronic switch 4 and secondary winding 3 is connected with spark plug 5, capacitive element 8 placed between leads of ignition coil primary winding and forming, together with winding, oscillatory LC-circuit, and pulse train generator 6 whose input is connected to control signal source 7 and output, to control input of electronic switch 4. System has device registering discharges through spark plug which have capacitive components and circuit 14 comparing the number of discharges with number of pulses in train put out by generator 6. Output of comparison circuit is coupled with ignition misses indicator and/or with device for cutting off fuel supply to engine cylinder. Discharge registration device can be made in form of series-connected inductive current sensor 9 in ignition coil secondary winding, rectifying diode 9 and threshold discriminator 12.
