FIELD: mechanical engineering; electron beam welding of constructional materials. SUBSTANCE: when carrying out scanning of butt joint line and axis of non-deflected electron emission current by electron beam, coincidence of butt joint line and axis of non-deflected electron beam is determined by extremum of amplitude of oscillations of one of components of secondary emission current spectrum. Coincidence of butt joint line and axis of non-deflected electron beam is determined by minimum of amplitude of component of spectrum of secondary emission current oscillations with frequency equal to frequency of scanning of butt joint by electron beam and/or by maximum of amplitude of oscillations of spectrum component with frequency equal to doubled frequency of scanning of butt joint with electron beam.
