FIELD: metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: DC electric arc furnace uses melt vessels with a refractory lining, cathode electrode installed in the center of the vessels cover, lower anode arrangement located near the electrical conducting vessel from the vessel wall to the melt; the lower vessel is connected to the current conductors in several quadrants; the power supply means use connecting plates for current conductors installed near each quadrant on the wall of the lower vessel; the current conductors are located below the cathode electrode in the horizontal plane running to the furnace wall, and the cathode electrode is connected to the source of rectified voltage via the mentioned electric holder. The DC electric arc furnace is powered as follows. Voltage is applied to the central upper cathode and lower anode connected to the current-conducting lower vessel of the furnace, and an electric arc is produced between the cathode and melt in the lower vessel; the electric arc is effected at a preset force by induction of additional magnetic fields; to induce additional magnetic fields, voltage is applied to the lower anode via several quadrants of the lower vessel by means of several current conductors; currents in the current conductors are adjusted in accordance with deflection of arc.
