FIELD: mechanical engineering. SUBSTANCE: method comes to filling engine cylinders with fresh charge, compression of charge in cylinder, ignition of mixture and exhaust of gases whose expansion energy is converted into mechanical work. Hydrogen is added to exhaust gas flow coming out of cylinder, and then mixture of exhaust gases and hydrogen is delivered into catalytic converter and through the latter, exhaust gases are let out into atmosphere. Oxygen produced in electrolyzer on board the vehicle together with hydrogen, is delivered into engine intake system. Addition of hydrogen to exhaust gases provides intensive afterburning of hydrocarbons and effective reducing of nitrogen oxides at no or lack of oxygen, thanks to which summary toxicity of exhaust gases is decreased. Simultaneous addition of hydrogen to exhaust gas flow and oxygen to fresh charge increases efficiency of conversion of nitrogen oxides and reduces consumption of fuel. EFFECT: reduced consumption of fuel, decreased pollution of atmosphere. 11 cl, 3 dwg
