FIELD: instruments, in particular, measurement of non-electric characteristics using resistance, inductance and capacitance detectors. SUBSTANCE: method involves measurement of duration of transient processes in resistor-capacitor or resistor-inductance circuit by means of application of exciting voltage or current to measuring circuit, alternation of exciting voltage or current using function which has at least two pieces of given characteristics. Each such piece has two linear measuring pieces with zero curvature and two exciting pieces. Simultaneously method involves generation of reference alternating signal which corresponds to these two pieces and has linear reference pieces with zero curvature each of which is defined for time of corresponding linear measuring piece of pair. Response of measuring circuit to exciting voltage or during first and second linear measuring pieces of pair is compared to reference signal. Additional time interval is added between moments when voltage levels are equal. Then these signals are compared during time intervals of third and fourth linear measuring pieces of pair. Additional second time interval is added between moments when signals are equal. Generated time intervals or their equivalents which are represented as another physical value by means of linear uniform transform of intervals are subjected to subtraction which provides information about characteristic to be measured. EFFECT: increased precision of measurements due to decreased error caused by instability of delay in signal transmission. 3 cl, 4 dwg
