FIELD: gas treatment. SUBSTANCE: to remove elementary sulfur contained in gas in the form of vapor and/or entrained particles, gas is cooled to a temperature between point of steam condensation and 120 C. Gas being treated at 120-300 C is fed into lower part of heat exchanger, whose wall is cooled by cooling medium to temperature below solidification point of sulfur and above steam condensation point, if some water is contained in gas. Deposited sulfur is removed by gravity in the stream countercurrent to sulfur-containing gas flow. Heat exchanger utilized may be tubular or of plate-type, vertical or inclined.
