FIELD: non-ferrous metallurgy; aluminium production. SUBSTANCE: oxygen-containing compound of formula Al2O3•nH2O, wherein 0.25<n<2.0, are subjected to mechanico-chemical activation treatment. Semi-finished product is continuously fed into granulator. Resulting granules are discharged onto conveyor which passes through chamber, in which predetermined partial pressure of water vapor is maintained within range of temperatures 25-100 C for 1-5 h. Granules thus-treated are subjected to drying in drier, followed by calcination in air flow. Calcination is effected at volume speed from 500 to 3000 h-1 and at temperature 330-900 C for 1-6 h. Mechanico-chemical activation treatment is carried out by subjecting material to impact effects in disintegrator, particles colliding with each other and with disintegrator rotor at velocity 80-200 m/sec.
