FIELD: gas treatment. SUBSTANCE: removal of sulfur dioxide from effluent gases includes bringing sulfur dioxide-containing effluent gas in contact with aqueous solution containing sulfuric acid, hydrogen bromide, and bromine to form additional sulfuric acid and hydrogen bromide, vapor- phase catalytic oxidation of hydrogen bromide into bromine, and subsequent recycling of the latter into the first process step. Oxidation step is carried out at 200 to 400 C for 2-10 s, while using as catalyst copper or vanadium oxide, or noble metals on alumina, silica, or zirconium oxide carrier.
