FIELD: inorganic chemistry; production of adsorbents, in particular, with hydrophilic properties. SUBSTANCE: catalytically active nuclei on surface of active alumina layer are modified by catalytically decomposing on them hydrocarbons in the form of clusters of carbon atoms. Clusters have average thickness 0.3-1.9 nm and diameter at least 0.5 nm and higher. Clusters are deposited onto active alumina layer to fully cover it with continuous carbon layer. Due to this modification treatment, hydrophil surface of alumina layer is constantly shielded by hydrophobic carbon unit continuous layer is formed. Proposed composite material comprises alumina, which surface is modified with carbon until continuous layer is formed with carbon content 1-40 wt.-% and mesopores volume 0.05-0.68 cu.cm/g.
