FIELD: underwater and technical acoustics. SUBSTANCE: in agreement with proposed method noise emitted by objects is received by two halves of antenna separated in space. Mutual spectrum between signals received by these two halves of antenna is measured, secondary spectrum of measured mutual spectrum or autocorrelation function is measured, measured function is normed to maximum, width of major lobe of normed function is measured at its levels from 0.1 to 0.8 of maximum value with interval, relation of preceding measurement to subsequent one is calculated in each interval, obtained results are compared with design ones. If measured values differ from design values decision on presence of several targets in one direction is made. Number of targets is judged by number of intervals having this distinction which makes it possible to determine number of noisy objects coming from one direction.
