FIELD: physics, acoustics.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to hydroacoustics and can be used to determine distance to a noisy object. The method includes receiving a hydroacoustic noise signal using halves of a hydroacoustic antenna; measuring the cross spectrum between hydroacoustic noise signals received by the halves of the hydroacoustic antenna; measuring the autocorrelation function of said cross spectrum; determining presence of flexures of the autocorrelation function, and in the absence thereof, measuring ΔTmeas - the width of the primary maximum of the autocorrelation function at the level of 0.1; determining a calibration coefficient M=Dknown./ΔTd.known., where Dknown. is the known distance of detecting a target with fixed noise emission with a known spectral decay, ΔTd.known. is the width of the primary maximum of the autocorrelation function corresponding to the known distance; and determining distance to the target using the formula D=ΔTmeas*M.

EFFECT: high reliability of measuring distance in shipping interfering conditions.
