FIELD: railway transport. SUBSTANCE: method is based of simultaneous irradiation of flange working surface by electromagnetic waves directed at acute angle to wheelset axis and at normal to inner side surface of wheel rim of standard wheelset, taking the signals reflected from flange and rim and measuring wear by difference in sum of differences of signal phases at generator output and signal reflected from flange and difference of signal phases at outlet of generator and signal reflected from wheel rim obtained for wheelset under checking from whole number π of radians в when standard wheelset is replaced by wheelset under checking. Device has electromagnetic wave generator, two directional devices coupled by outputs of main channels with two transceiver antennas, three-channel signal splitter whose input is connected with generator output and first output is connected with input of directional device coupled with first antenna, two amplitude detectors, phase shifter, three two-channel signal splitters, two phase detectors, two threshold devices, signal modulo adder, AND gate and switch.
