FIELD: measurement technology. SUBSTANCE: standard wheel flange is irradiated in direction of its side operating surface at acute to wheel axle, and rim of the same wheel is irradiated according to normal to its external side surface. At the same time signals reflected from wheel flange and rim in opposite direction are received, and phase difference between these signals is measured. Then phase of one of these signals is changed so that phase difference is equal to zero. Standard wheel is replaced by wheel to be checked, and phase difference of signals reflected from rim and flange of wheel being checked is measured by indicator scale. Measured value is used to determine reduction of flange thickness of wheel being checked. Device designed to realize this method has generator of centimeter-band electromagnetic waves, power divider, two directed devices, two transmit-receive antennas, phase detector, phase inverter, and indicator.
