FIELD: chemical industry. SUBSTANCE: claimed method comprises reacting valerolactones or isomers thereof with carbon monoxide and water to prepare corresponding diacid. More specifically, the claimed method comprises reacting carbon monoxide and water with at least one lactone having 5 carbon atoms in the presence of effective amount of irridium catalyst and iodine- or bromine-containing promotor, promotor to iridium molar ratio being 0.1-20/1. The claimed method makes it possible to utilize gamma valerolactone to prepare adipic acid. EFFECT: more efficient hydroxycarbonylation method. 13 cl, 12 ex, 1 tbl
