FIELD: electrical engineering, automation, in particular, controlled linear actuators. SUBSTANCE: device has magnetic system with main controlled source of magnetic field, core which is made from magnetostrictive material, actuation member which is connected to core. Main magnetic field source is made from generation of magnetic field pulses in core so that intensity vectors are not parallel with respect to each other. Magnet of core provides residual magnetostrictive effect. Corresponding method for control of converter by means of alternation of mass center of actuation member involves generation of main magnetic field in core region and at least one alternation of intensity of this magnetic field in range of zero to intensity level which provides magnetostrictive saturation of material of core and keeping constant position of center of mass of actuation member. Main magnetic field is generated by non-simultaneous pulses of non-parallel magnetic fields. Constant coordinate of position of center of mass of actuation member is kept at zero level of main magnetic field intensity in region of core during said pulses of magnetic fields in range of Δ2Lxmax (or Δ2L1x
