FIELD: metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: annealing is carried out in annealing furnace under protective gas atmosphere. Annealing chamber is connected with apparatus for cleaning part of protective gas stream. Protective gas may be cooled. Condensate formed from water steam and residual oil is separated upon rolling and/or undesirable gas constituents are removed by absorption. If the rolling sets protective gas essentially free of residual oil, protective gas is passed through hot reaction chamber to remove oxygen. Dew point is thereby reduced and readily oxidizable alloying constituents of material being annealed become protected against oxidation. EFFECT: simplified and cheapened deoxygenation of protective gas. 16 cl, 1 dwg
