FIELD: metallurgy; applicable in melting of low-grade wastes of magnesium casting, such as slags, scrap, bottom residues of metal in furnace, etc. SUBSTANCE: method includes melting with use of fluxes containing 6-10% of one of fluorine salts such as MgF2, AlF3, ZnF2 and CaF2, the balance, carnallite or carnallite with barium chloride; cooling of melt to solid state; secondary melting at temperature of 680-720 C and tapping of its metal part. Carnallite with barium chloride contains 3-5% of barium chloride. EFFECT: increased yield of metal by 44-61% in melting of slags, and by 21-36% in melting of scraps, reduced melt rejections and toxicity of process. 1 tbl
