FIELD: mechanical engineering. SUBSTANCE: proposed method includes shaping of blank in form of hollow sphere, placing of spherical insert in cavity of blank, placing of blank in spherical housing, loading of blank by spherically converging wave formed by layer of explosive agent, cyclic pulse loading of blank at successively reducing level of pressure accompanied by heating of part of blank in front of converging wave to temperature above melting point. Preliminary shaping of blank is effected to density of no less than 0.5 of density of particles of starting powder; profiles of loading pulse at level of stresses which are constant or reducing in time are formed in converging stress waves in entire layer of blank being machined. Insert is made from material whose acoustic stiffness is lesser than acoustic stiffness of agent being compacted. Initial size of insert is determined form the following relation: , where Ro is initial radius of spherical insert; Rcav is radius of cavity formed in insert in course of loading; Eo - is energy transmitted to insert by moment of focusing spherically converging wave; A, β - are constants of insert material determined experimentally at variations of Ro and Eo..
