FIELD: organic synthesis. SUBSTANCE: method is accomplished by carboxylation of adamantane with formic acid in chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon in presence of sulfuric acid and tert-butyl alcohol. Adamantane, 97-100% sulfuric acid, 98-100% formic acid, and alcohol are taken in molar proportion 1:(15-25):(4.5-5.5):(3-3.5), and process is carried out at 17-25 C for 2-3 hr. 1-Adamantanecarboxylic acid is isolated by treating solution of product in carbon tetrachloride with aqueous ammonia to form ammonium salt of product and subsequent conversion of this salt into potassium salt using potassium hydroxide treatment.
