FIELD: instruments for electrical engineering. SUBSTANCE: method involves excitation of high-voltage discharges in cable with broken insulation, detection of electromagnetic waves emitted by cable during discharge, converting signal and detection of breakdown point by alternation of signal characteristics with respect to reference signal which is characteristic for high-voltage discharges in cable with broken insulation and is stored in memory unit of instrument. In case of most complete matching of received and reference signal, information is displayed on oscilloscope screen for further analysis by operator. EFFECT: simplified search of breakdown points in conditions of heavy industrial noise. 2 cl, 1 dwg
