FIELD: chemical industry. SUBSTANCE: present invention describes preparation of 4-methyl-1,3-dioxolane from 1,2- propylene glycol and formaldehyde (formalin, paraform, trioxane). In order to increase yield of 4-method-1,3- dioxolane and reduce consumption of materials used for preparation thereof, process is carried out by combining synthesis and rectification stages, the whole of original 1,2-propylene glycol or part thereof is introduced in counterflow to flow of products being removed from reaction zone. Method is useful for preparation of 4- methyl-1,3-dioxolane used in production of copolymers and as component of electrolytes of lithium chemical current sources.
