FIELD: petroleum processing. SUBSTANCE: hydrocarbon material is passed in upward direction reaction zone of hydrogenation converter containing essentially compacted catalyst bed. Distinguishing feature consists in that catalyst in reaction zone is composed of particles with average size ranging from 35 to 3 mesh and such size distribution that at least 90% of catalyst particles have diameter between R₁ (ca.0.04 to 0.63 cm) and R₂ (ca.0.04 to 0.63 cm) provided that R₂/R₁ ratio varies approximately from 1.0 to 1.4.
