FIELD: composite materials. SUBSTANCE: multizone cermets of present invention can be used with articles including tools for treating and removing materials for application, for example, in mining industry, construction, agriculture, and mechanical operations. Products containing cermets, preferably cemented carbides and, more specifically, tungsten carbide have at least two zones with at least one distinguishing feature. In addition, cermets manifest uniform and controlled attrition so that to confer self-sharpening property on product. In applications with attrition, especially suitable are multizone cermets. Cermets are manufactured by superposing and compacting at least two powder mixtures with different properties (for example, different grain size of carbide, different chemical properties of carbide, different binder content, different chemical properties of binder, or any combination of indicated possibilities). The first cermet zone should contain first ceramic component with relatively coarse grains and specified amount of binder. The second zone, superposed or touching the first zone, should contain second ceramic component, preferably carbides, with grain size lesser than that in the first zone. It is also desirable that content of the second binder exceeded that of the first one. EFFECT: increased service life of product as compared to monolith cermets under the same condition, for example, attrition conditions. 37 cl, 27 dwg, 5 tbl, 11 ex
