FIELD: treatment of metals by pressure. SUBSTANCE: method consists in application of compressive force in two steps. Force is applied by impact action of deforming members with convex operating surface, thus producing residual compressive stresses exceeding ultimate strength in material of article. First step includes formation of adjacent imprints separated by projections on surface being treated. Second step contains upsetting of projections by applying force by means of deforming member with cylindrical operating surface. High degree of strengthening is obtained due to creation of residual compressive stresses of high value in material of article at large depth. EFFECT: enhanced efficiency. 1 ex, 5 dwg
