SUBSTANCE: when preparing absorbent with elevated absorption capacity with regard to acidic gases, for example, sulfur dioxide and hydrocyanic acid, carbon basis is impregnated with alkali metal hydroxides and carbonates, aged, and thermally treated at 120-160 C. According to invention, carbon basis is activated carbon, pure or containing copper oxides, having summary pore volume 0.85-1.25 cu.cm/g, and impregnation is carried out until 5.0-9.5% copper and 5.9- 9.4% potassium concentrations are attained.
