METHOD AND DEVICE FOR CLEANING TERRAIN AND SOIL FROM RADIONUCLIDES Russian patent published in 1999 - IPC

FIELD: decontamination of terrain and soil. SUBSTANCE: method involves formation of porous cone-ended filter tubes from clay powder capable of sorbing radionuclides. Then filter tubes are annealed, sorted out, tested, packed, and transported to contaminated areas. Depth of occurrence of radionuclides in soil is determined on contaminated areas, geodetic marks are set, trenches are made,. leveled out, and tube filters are placed in them to form enclosed drainage system below radionuclides in soil. Drainage system is joined with radionuclide entrapping wells which are, in their turn, connected to canals discharging clean water to river channels; after that, trenches are backfilled. Upon expiration of certain time recognized by amount of precipitation on area being decontaminated and by sorbing ability of filter tubes, the latter are extracted from trenches and recovered. Cycle is repeated, if necessary, until soil is fully decontaminated. Diameter of entrapping wells is to be 1 or 2 m.
